Waffilicious at the French Quarter

So we took the dudes to the new waffle truck that opened up at the corner of 35th and Multnomah at the “French Quarter”, home to the amazing Noy Viet Lao, Eagle Fish (formerly “Kris’ Fish”), Hey Stella and Parson Farms.  We are so lucky to have all this in our little neighborhood!  So as far as the waffle truck: it has breakfast waffles, dessert waffles, and waffles that can be eaten for lunch or dinner.  Some examples include eggs and bacon on waffles, ham cheese and tomato on waffles, chicken pesto waffles, banana and Nutella waffles, peanut butter, jelly and bacon waffles – you get the picture. Hopefully they will put up the menu on the web soon because I couldn’t remember all of the choices!  Mom and dad are on a diet and couldn’t try the waffles but judging by their faces they were giant hits and we will be back!

Spork

We stopped here for lunch on the way to Steens Mountain. It’s located just outside of downtown Bend.  We didn’t know what to expect with this Mexican/Asian fusion order at the register place but the menu looked good and it had a good crowd.  It was by far our best find this year!  Lowell ordered the chilaquiles.  It was a mild dish but good, and they added a small pile of jalapeños in case you wanted to kick it up a notch.  Aidan got the shredded pork rice bowl, the pork was sweet and really well done, with the sauce I can’t describe that had peanuts and vegetables in it.  Dad got the cat fish tacos. Again, really good.  Dad is from the south and knows what fried catfish should taste like -the catfish was lightly fried in clean oil, lightly seasoned and perfectly cooked with a side of jalapeños in case you want to add some kick to it.  I got the Carnitas Sando which was a slow roasted pork sandwich with a fried egg, cabbage and other vegetables, cotija cheese and yucca chips and lots of amazing sauce.  Definitely not the low-fat option but it was amazing.  We SO need a Spork in Portland. We all agreed it would go over really well. Everyone there is really nice, the music is loud, but this helps drown the noise of the kids, and we were in and out of there really fast!  Love!!!

Double Happiness

We needed a place to stop for lunch on the way to Burns and we were burger and a hotdog’d out so we found ourselves at Double Happiness Chinese restaurant off Hwy 20 in Bend.  We were a little wary at first, but the food wasn’t half bad. It’s your standard run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurant. Lolo ordered “mothers chicken”. which he was very excited about.  Dad was disappointed with his Kung Pao shrimp: hardly any shrimp and way too much  zucchini.  The sweet and sour was ok, same with the chow mein.  The portions were WAY too big though.  The boys liked it and that’s all that mattered!

Takoda’s

This weekend we went camping in the Three Sisters wilderness area, and while we did our fair share of hotdogs and smores, we decided to go out to lunch in “Rainbow” Oregon.  We thought it would be appropriate to take the boys to lunch in “Nimrod”, Oregon but there were no restaurants there.  So we ended up at Takoda’s. It was actually pretty good. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, they have a pretty good beer selection and cocktail list, very kid friendly, with a gift shop that has everything you don’t need but want to buy anyway (lots of candy and a great jelly belly selection).  We ordered burgers and Ruebens, and everything was very good. The service was great, everyone there is really nice, and Takoda’s is conveniently located next to the only grocery and gas station within a good distance!  Two thumbs up for Takoda’s!

Park Kitchen

Ok, so it was mom and dad’s anniversary and we didn’t make any plans and then last minute decided we wanted to go out.  We took the dudes to one of our favorite dinner spots, Park Kitchen.  Aidan got the “House Squirt” and Lolo got a custom made limeaid from the bar.  We all decided we would do the Chef’s Tasting menu so we could be surprised.  First out were smoked prawns – two thumbs up from the dudes.  Second was the cod fritters, Lolo gave them two thumbs up, but Aidan said they tasted too much like potatoes and not enough like cod.  Then pork terrine sliders.  Big hit with the dudes.  Of course.  Lolo pointed out that they were better than mom’s pulled pork sliders.  Then the snap pea soup which was outstanding but apparently too green for the boys.  Did their one obligatory taste and that was it.  Beet salad with blood orange, pistachios and goat cheese – good, but not a hit with the dudes.  Then duck sausage with grits and broccolini.  Best dish EVER (according to Aidan and Lowell).  Finally, some beautiful cod and pork, but frankly, even though the two dishes were awesome we were all getting stuffed and so the excitement was fading.   Then desert.  Lolo loved the chocolate cake salted caramel hazelnut ice cream desert, and the rhubarb donuts were a hit with Aidan.  The sorrel panna cotta, well, it was very nice, but mom was the only one that ate it.  Really reasonable for 2.5 hours of amazing food and great service for $65/head!  Kid friendly?  Yes, but not in the kids menu run amuck kind of way.  You have to have kids that love food and can stay in their seats and keep the volume down, but if you do, this is the place!  They were so nice to the boys and treated them like little adults!  Oh, and if you like Moscow Mules they make a killer non-ginger beer version.  It’s all about the fresh ginger!

Casa Vaca Taqueria, Part II

So, the dudes have blogged about Casa Vaca before, but this was before they started serving brunch on the weekends.  Of course we had to try it!  Lowell got the eggs Benedict, which looked absolutely amazing – he even devoured the spinach! Mom got the breakfast enchiladas which were to die for, and dad got the huevos rancheros which were also amazing. But the winner was Aidan’s Tres Leches French toast. Oh. My. God. This one I made sure to try even though I was stuffed and it was the best thing ever created. It was decadent, delicious, all around perfect.  But adults beware, you may need to wear your stretchy pants to this one. Their mimosas are pretty darn good too!  Finally, as always, everyone there is super nice and it is so family friendly and easy to go with kids!!  We love Casa Vaca!!!  Their brunch menu is on their website.  http://www.casavacapdx.com/menu

Troutini

This is the first review where mom and dad did not help in the review.

Lowell says it was great and he would go back there.  “i’m telling you, it’s way far out”. (From Aidan) The corn chowder and french fries were really good.  The crab melt was really good but without the cheese or the tomato. Just the crab and bread.  Lowell:  their lemonade is better than dad’s because the lady said it was made with fresh lemons.

From mom and dad:  Not cheap, great Martinis and service, and you can safely eat in Troutdale.  It was dead on a Thursday at lunch which allowed the dudes to goof off more than we would normally allow.   And who knew that fries dipped in corn chowder would be such a big hit!

    
    
 

Oak & Olive

Well, we finally have a new restaurant in Hillsdale.  We got there at 5:00 and by the time we got our first dish it was packed.  VERY kid friendly, wide open layout, and they really love olive oil (the shirts the dudes wore are ruined). It’s busy, full of kids – definitely not the place to go for your romantic dinner, but the dudes loved it and the food was pretty good.  Lolo got the green olive pizza, which was a hit, and Aidan got the smoked salmon ravioli, also a hit.  The Muffaletta was “too spicy” for them, but we picked up the slack.  You order at the counter and then sit, but everything went smoothly.  Overall quite pleased.  The dudes will be back! 

   

Shark’s Seafood Bar and Steamer

We were meeting a friend who also has six-year-old twins in Newport to go fishing and we needed somewhere to go eat dinner together. I called and asked if they had room for seven in the restaurant and she said that there were no guarantees (they don’t take reservations) but we could give it a try. We did, and we had no idea the restaurant only had 4 tables and a bar and was slammed.  Despite this the service was great although it was a little slow because they were shorthanded. Our server maintained a great sense of humor and was wonderful towards the kids.  The boys all had clams and clam linguine and loved it, two of us had the cioppino which was outstanding. Dad had the crab and while the crab was good he really didn’t need all the veggies and fruit that came with it.  When we got there and saw how small it was we were sure we would not get a seat, much less have such an outstanding dinner.  But it was wonderful!  Two thumbs up for Shark’s!!

      

Renner’s Grill

Well, the dudes can now finally blog about Renner’s in the Village.  That’s because Renner’s Grill is an awesome bar, but because it is a bar, there are no kids allowed.  Aidan and Lowell still have 15 years to wait to get in, but today, thanks to what they are calling the “French Quarter” on the corner of Multnomah and 35th, the boys’ were able to finally eat Renner’s food, near Renner’s.  They are serving food and cocktails there each weekend.  Today they were serving up Creole food (apparently Josh can cook anything!).  Aidan and Lowell both got the red beans and rice, which was amazing (they frequently order better than us).  My etoufee was pretty darn good, and dad enjoyed his Muffaletta, which he said was pretty darn authentic and tasty – just needed a little more bread for all the meat and olive salad.  It was yummy and we were happy the boys finally got to try it!  The whole French Quarter thing is pretty fun too.  It’s really family friendly – vendors selling all sorts of stuff, crafts and face painting for the kids, music, the Flying Fish Truck, the Pho truck, and of course, our beloved Renner’s!
