Waffilicious at the French Quarter

So we took the dudes to the new waffle truck that opened up at the corner of 35th and Multnomah at the “French Quarter”, home to the amazing Noy Viet Lao, Eagle Fish (formerly “Kris’ Fish”), Hey Stella and Parson Farms.  We are so lucky to have all this in our little neighborhood!  So as far as the waffle truck: it has breakfast waffles, dessert waffles, and waffles that can be eaten for lunch or dinner.  Some examples include eggs and bacon on waffles, ham cheese and tomato on waffles, chicken pesto waffles, banana and Nutella waffles, peanut butter, jelly and bacon waffles – you get the picture. Hopefully they will put up the menu on the web soon because I couldn’t remember all of the choices!  Mom and dad are on a diet and couldn’t try the waffles but judging by their faces they were giant hits and we will be back!

Spork

We stopped here for lunch on the way to Steens Mountain. It’s located just outside of downtown Bend.  We didn’t know what to expect with this Mexican/Asian fusion order at the register place but the menu looked good and it had a good crowd.  It was by far our best find this year!  Lowell ordered the chilaquiles.  It was a mild dish but good, and they added a small pile of jalapeños in case you wanted to kick it up a notch.  Aidan got the shredded pork rice bowl, the pork was sweet and really well done, with the sauce I can’t describe that had peanuts and vegetables in it.  Dad got the cat fish tacos. Again, really good.  Dad is from the south and knows what fried catfish should taste like -the catfish was lightly fried in clean oil, lightly seasoned and perfectly cooked with a side of jalapeños in case you want to add some kick to it.  I got the Carnitas Sando which was a slow roasted pork sandwich with a fried egg, cabbage and other vegetables, cotija cheese and yucca chips and lots of amazing sauce.  Definitely not the low-fat option but it was amazing.  We SO need a Spork in Portland. We all agreed it would go over really well. Everyone there is really nice, the music is loud, but this helps drown the noise of the kids, and we were in and out of there really fast!  Love!!!

Double Happiness

We needed a place to stop for lunch on the way to Burns and we were burger and a hotdog’d out so we found ourselves at Double Happiness Chinese restaurant off Hwy 20 in Bend.  We were a little wary at first, but the food wasn’t half bad. It’s your standard run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurant. Lolo ordered “mothers chicken”. which he was very excited about.  Dad was disappointed with his Kung Pao shrimp: hardly any shrimp and way too much  zucchini.  The sweet and sour was ok, same with the chow mein.  The portions were WAY too big though.  The boys liked it and that’s all that mattered!

Takoda’s

This weekend we went camping in the Three Sisters wilderness area, and while we did our fair share of hotdogs and smores, we decided to go out to lunch in “Rainbow” Oregon.  We thought it would be appropriate to take the boys to lunch in “Nimrod”, Oregon but there were no restaurants there.  So we ended up at Takoda’s. It was actually pretty good. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, they have a pretty good beer selection and cocktail list, very kid friendly, with a gift shop that has everything you don’t need but want to buy anyway (lots of candy and a great jelly belly selection).  We ordered burgers and Ruebens, and everything was very good. The service was great, everyone there is really nice, and Takoda’s is conveniently located next to the only grocery and gas station within a good distance!  Two thumbs up for Takoda’s!

IBU

So we finally made it to the IBU. It used to be an Italian restaurant, a burger place, the Melting Pot, and so on. This place is awesome for families. Kids can be as loud as they want and nobody will hear them. They’ve got TV screens all over the place which the kids become glued to letting the adults have a little time to talk. The beer selection is vast, and frankly, much to our surprise the food is pretty good! Aidan got the elk burger which he devoured, Lolo got the “What Burger” which he ate half of, which is good for Lolo – it was a giant burger (I wish i had gotten it). I got the lamb burger, which was great, but not nearly as exciting as the “What Burger”. The dudes gave it a thumbs up and we will return. If you have a large crowd with a large appetite this is the place to be. Oh, and the service was great too!

Conin

Conin RestaurantWe decided to take the dudes here after good things about it throughout the village. This location used to be our favorite Indian restaurant but it closed a few years back. Lolo really liked the salsa (it was pretty good). For an appetizer we shared tje “Molletes”, basically bread with mashed beans, cheese, and tomato – can’t go wrong there! Aidan and dad ordered the beef burrito, which they were both very impressed with. Mom ordered the beef chimichanga which was also very good. Lolo ordered the Enfrijoladas. He wasnt big on his because he was expecting an enchilada. They have a full bar, its kid friendly, and everyone there is super nice. Overall, the dudes gave it two thumbs up. Hopefully this restaurant makes it in the spot where restaurants go to die.

Casa Vaca Taqueria, Part II

So, the dudes have blogged about Casa Vaca before, but this was before they started serving brunch on the weekends.  Of course we had to try it!  Lowell got the eggs Benedict, which looked absolutely amazing – he even devoured the spinach! Mom got the breakfast enchiladas which were to die for, and dad got the huevos rancheros which were also amazing. But the winner was Aidan’s Tres Leches French toast. Oh. My. God. This one I made sure to try even though I was stuffed and it was the best thing ever created. It was decadent, delicious, all around perfect.  But adults beware, you may need to wear your stretchy pants to this one. Their mimosas are pretty darn good too!  Finally, as always, everyone there is super nice and it is so family friendly and easy to go with kids!!  We love Casa Vaca!!!  Their brunch menu is on their website.  http://www.casavacapdx.com/menu

Medley

Now this may not be the most kid friendly place in the Village – depends on the kid.  Lots of cool tea pots that could be broken, and the people in here just want to relax over some tea and food so it may not be for kids that can’t keep the decibel level down, but ours had a blast.  Aidan loves tea so we got him a pot of mint tea which he got to steep himself.  Lowell isn’t really a tea guy so he got some O.J.  This is the place to go for tea, whether you want to drink it there or buy it to drink at home.  Their selection is enormous (and the tea is pretty good too).  Aidan got the berry compote crepes – big hit, and Lowell got the finger egg salad sandwiches – twice.  Mom got the bagel and lox.  Everything was wonderful and the people there were very sweet to the boys.  Medley is a place that seems to encourage conversation, even with 8 year olds.  No distractions, just us and our food and tea.  Everything was delicious, and the dudes ended it with some pineapple carrot cake.  Dudes give it two thumbs up!!

Casa Vaca Taqueria 

We always do a little happy dance when a new restaurant opens up in the village.  As far as we are concerned there can never be enough good ones.  So we were very hopeful when the old Mexican joint closed (not so good) and a new one was to take its place.  Casa Vaca Taqueria was a wonderful surprise. The food was really good, it was very family-friendly and the family running it were really nice. It’s not your overly cheesy heavy Mexican, but it’s not quite as vegetable intensive as say, Cocina Verde.  Lolo ordered the nachos, can’t go wrong there. Aidan ordered a bacon blue and honey quesadilla. It could’ve been really bad or really good and it turned out to be really good although quite heavy and could have easily been dessert!  Mark got the open faced shrimp quesadilla and I got the shrimp tacos. No complaints all-around although the spicy shrimp wasn’t spicy. But we will forgive them that!  Added bonus – they make a kale side salad that even my boys liked!  They treated the dudes like little adults and it is now one of the dudes’ favorite restaurants in the Village.

Tastebud

We, along with most of Multnomah Village have been waiting for this for a long time. They opened last week and today we finally  got to try Tastebud.  We got there at 5:15 and they called us when our table was ready, about 40 minutes later.  So worth the wait!  If you are with kids, the best place to be is all the way in the back where the kids can watch the woodfired oven and all the action. Our kids loved it!  The dudes gave us the play-by-play of everything that came out of that oven.  Lowell’s favorite where the oven braised clams with bacon and lemon wine sauce.  Aidan’s favorite was the lamb sausage and jalapeño pizza, but with the jalapeño taken off.  Both dudes loved the bruschetta with butternut squash and rabbit confit.  Dessert was of course a no-brainer.  We were lucky we got there when we did, as we were leaving at around 7:00 they were quoting a 60 to 75 minute wait.  We are thrilled to have them, and we will be back. The boys were so excited. It’s not just the food, but it’s all the people watching and being able to watch that oven if you get that right table!
