Spork

We stopped here for lunch on the way to Steens Mountain. It’s located just outside of downtown Bend.  We didn’t know what to expect with this Mexican/Asian fusion order at the register place but the menu looked good and it had a good crowd.  It was by far our best find this year!  Lowell ordered the chilaquiles.  It was a mild dish but good, and they added a small pile of jalapeƱos in case you wanted to kick it up a notch.  Aidan got the shredded pork rice bowl, the pork was sweet and really well done, with the sauce I can’t describe that had peanuts and vegetables in it.  Dad got the cat fish tacos. Again, really good.  Dad is from the south and knows what fried catfish should taste like -the catfish was lightly fried in clean oil, lightly seasoned and perfectly cooked with a side of jalapeƱos in case you want to add some kick to it.  I got the Carnitas Sando which was a slow roasted pork sandwich with a fried egg, cabbage and other vegetables, cotija cheese and yucca chips and lots of amazing sauce.  Definitely not the low-fat option but it was amazing.  We SO need a Spork in Portland. We all agreed it would go over really well. Everyone there is really nice, the music is loud, but this helps drown the noise of the kids, and we were in and out of there really fast!  Love!!!

Double Happiness

We needed a place to stop for lunch on the way to Burns and we were burger and a hotdog’d out so we found ourselves at Double Happiness Chinese restaurant off Hwy 20 in Bend.  We were a little wary at first, but the food wasn’t half bad. It’s your standard run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurant. Lolo ordered “mothers chicken”. which he was very excited about.  Dad was disappointed with his Kung Pao shrimp: hardly any shrimp and way too much  zucchini.  The sweet and sour was ok, same with the chow mein.  The portions were WAY too big though.  The boys liked it and that’s all that mattered!

Takoda’s

This weekend we went camping in the Three Sisters wilderness area, and while we did our fair share of hotdogs and smores, we decided to go out to lunch in “Rainbow” Oregon.  We thought it would be appropriate to take the boys to lunch in “Nimrod”, Oregon but there were no restaurants there.  So we ended up at Takoda’s. It was actually pretty good. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, they have a pretty good beer selection and cocktail list, very kid friendly, with a gift shop that has everything you don’t need but want to buy anyway (lots of candy and a great jelly belly selection).  We ordered burgers and Ruebens, and everything was very good. The service was great, everyone there is really nice, and Takoda’s is conveniently located next to the only grocery and gas station within a good distance!  Two thumbs up for Takoda’s!

Ataula

The dudes finally made it to Ataula, a Spanish tapas place we’ve been meaning to try but seeing the crowds we knew we couldn’t just go any old night on a whim. We went Saturday and arrived 15 minutes before they opened at 4:30 and there were already people waiting, but we got in and as the dudes will attest- this place is awesome!! The chorizo dogs were yummy, the meatballs were to die for, and the ham specials were delicious (mom got the special with 4 year aged ham, from a pig that was fed only acorns and grass for its last four years served with a poached egg, potatoes, and assorted exotic mushrooms- comfort food at its finest!!). The boys shares the seafood paella – they loved the seafood but Lolo wasn’t a big fan of the rice (it was a dirty rice instead of the saffron rice they are accustomed to). Apparently the desert was outstanding but mom was too full to try it. The boys will be back for sure. The staff was awesome and took time to explain everything to us and treated the boys like little adults, and the noise level is such that the kids can be loud and no one would even know it. Either get there right before they open, or go with a party of six or more so you can reserve a table, but it was truly amazing!! Although now I feel compelled to try ham that has not been aged for four years and not fed exclusively acorns so I have something to compare it to, but that of course was lost on the dudes.
